Lionel Messi is Coming to Vancouver to Face the Whitecaps

The Vancouver Whitecaps are going to play against Inter Miami at BC Place on May 25, and there’s a chance that Lionel Messi, an eight-time Ballon D’Or winner and current World Cup champion, might be part of the game. However, several factors could influence Messi’s decision not to play, including his age (36 years old, turning 37 in June) and his preference to avoid playing on artificial turf. BC Place has artificial grass. Messi has skipped games on similar surfaces before, like one in Atlanta last September. Yet, he has also played on artificial turf, like at Bank of America Stadium against Charlotte FC on Oct. 22.

Miami would need to consider the logistics of flying Messi across the continent for a single game in Vancouver, especially considering the workload and the smaller market size of Vancouver in the 29-team league. Single match tickets for the game will be available for purchase in the new year, with priority pre-sale access for season members. The Whitecaps’ season opener is scheduled for March 2 against Charlotte FC.
