BREAKING: Tsunami Advisory Issued for Parts of British Columbia Coast After Alaskan Earthquake

Emergency officials have issued a tsunami advisory for parts of British Columbia’s coastline following a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off the Kuril Islands near Russia in the early hours of Tuesday.

The quake, which occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. PT on Monday, triggered tsunami watches across the North Pacific. While the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake’s epicenter at a depth of 90 kilometers, its far-reaching effects prompted both Canada and the United States to issue precautionary alerts.

In British Columbia, Emergency Management BC has issued a tsunami advisory for:

  • The North Coast and Haida Gwaii
  • The Central Coast, including Bella Coola and Bella Bella
  • The West Coast of Vancouver Island
  • The Sunshine Coast, including areas around Sechelt and Powell River

“A tsunami has been generated that could affect coastal areas of British Columbia,” reads a statement from Emergency Info BC. “Strong currents and the possibility of localized flooding in low-lying coastal areas are expected.”

While no widespread flooding is currently anticipated, officials are urging the public to:

  • Stay away from beaches, shorelines, harbours, and marinas
  • Follow instructions from local authorities
  • Avoid recreational boating and waterfront activity until the advisory is lifted

The tsunami waves, if they reach B.C., are expected to produce strong and unpredictable currents rather than large, crashing waves. Coastal communities were advised to be on alert between 9:30 AM and noon Pacific Time.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and Canadian authorities are continuing to monitor the situation. According to Global News, the United States initially issued a tsunami watch for parts of the Aleutian Islands and Alaska, which was later downgraded. However, Canadian emergency services have maintained their advisory due to B.C.’s vulnerability to changing ocean currents.

No evacuation orders have been issued as of yet, but Emergency Management BC encourages residents in coastal zones to remain prepared and follow official updates.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
