Celebrating Canada’s 157th Birthday: Events Around Vancouver

Although there are no fireworks in the City of Vancouver to celebrate Canada’s 157th birthday, you can still catch spectacular displays in nearby cities. Here’s a roundup of where to enjoy fireworks and other festivities:

City of Vancouver

Vancouver will host a lively event at Canada Place and Jack Poole Plaza, featuring indoor and outdoor performances by Said the Whale, Fake Shark, and the Free Label. The celebration also includes an Indigenous display, a kids’ zone, food trucks, and a beer garden with a DJ. The day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with a citizenship ceremony in a ballroom, and the rest of the activities will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

City of Surrey

Surrey boasts Western Canada’s largest Canada Day event, with performances by The Sheepdogs, Sass Jordan, the White Thunder Dance Theatre, DJ Marvel, and more. Events begin at 10:45 a.m. at the Prospera Main Stage, located at the Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Cloverdale, and conclude with fireworks at 10:15 p.m.

City of Burnaby

Burnaby offers several events across the city, culminating in fireworks.

  • Edmonds Plaza and Park: Live entertainment, kids’ activities, games, and cake from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Burnaby Village Museum: Multicultural family entertainment, displays, demonstrations, and face-painting from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Civic Square, Central Boulevard, and Central Park: Performances by Tiger Really, Hayley Wallis, Tanika Charles, and Dear Rouge. Fireworks will light up Central Park at 10:15 p.m.

City of New Westminster

New Westminster’s celebrations kick off on June 29 with an indoor playland at the Queensborough Community Centre. On July 1, the city hosts “Canada Day by the River” from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., featuring food vendors, live music, a circus, and children’s activities.

City of Coquitlam

Coquitlam’s festivities start at noon and continue until 10 p.m. at Town Centre Park. Enjoy performances including hip hop dancing, juggling, Japanese pop, reggae, and Bollywood. Fireworks will conclude the evening at 10 p.m.

City of Port Moody

Port Moody begins celebrations early on June 30 with a performance by 1980s Canadian rock band Trooper as part of the Golden Spike Days Festival at Rocky Point Park. On July 1, “Pop-Up City Hall” runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and kids can apply to be mayor for the day. A ceremony with performances and a group singing of “O Canada” starts at 1 p.m. at the PCT Performance Stage.

City of Port Coquitlam

Port Coquitlam’s day begins with a fishing derby at Lions Park from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The day includes performers, activities, food trucks, and a beer garden, with headliner Tim Hicks taking the stage at 8:40 p.m. The grand finale fireworks will close out the evening.
