Canucks Game Day: Arshdeep Bains set to make NHL debut

Arshdeep Bains, signed as a free agent by the Canucks in 2022, is poised to face Nathan MacKinnon’s Colorado Avalanche.

The anticipation: The moment seems to have arrived for Arshdeep Bains, the Surrey native who went undrafted at every level, as he prepares to fulfill his NHL dream.

Following an optional morning skate on Tuesday in Denver, head coach Rick Tocchet hinted that Bains, who was called up on Friday, is likely to make his debut in the Canucks’ lineup against the Avalanche.

Tocchet mentioned on Saturday that Bains would need to practice with his NHL teammates at least once before being considered. Tuesday marked the first opportunity for Bains to practice with the Canucks since his call-up, and apparently, it was sufficient.

Reflecting on his journey, Bains expressed, “It’s been a heck of a journey,” during a media availability in Denver on Tuesday. “It’s every kid’s dream to play for their hometown team.”

Bains is set to join the ranks of only four Punjabi players to have graced the NHL, including Robin Bawa, Manny Malhotra, and Jujhar Khaira.

Bains is expected to line up alongside Conor Garland and Teddy Blueger, with Dakota Joshua sidelined due to injury.
