VIFW is back Nov. 20-23, this time at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theater.
It has been billed as “the gathering that forges links between fashion and indigenous values, knowledge, and history; aimed at serving strength, resilience, and better understanding leading to reconciliation among Indigenous and non-indigenous communities.”
This year’s event will have fifteen native artists and designers from the Northwest Territory.
According to Joleen Mitton, Founder and Artistic Director of VIFW, “we are delighted to present the designs of the Northwest Territories and give our public an opportunity to experience different aspects of the local culture.”
Together with the Wisdom Circle – an indigenous collaborative team comprising leaders from the Musqueam; Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations – they have organized runway shows that will occur over four consecutive days at Vancouver International Fashion Week (VIFW
The fashion events will showcase four themes: Red Dress Event (Nov. Honour “missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two-spirit and LGBTQ members of our communities”, All My Relations (Nov. 21) presenting designers from Turtle Island with traditional practices combined with contemporary esthetics; Indigenous Futures (N the company’s motto (XXIII). to celebrate West Coast design “with a signature West Coast spirit!
